I just noticed today that the BV Mercatile store is empty??? What happened to it? I noticed a couple weeks ago the flooring business closed up and moved out, but not the Mercatile...........I loved that little place. Where else can one go around here to buy your lingerie, milk, and a pair of garden gloves in the same place.....haha? :)

I was in there a couple of weeks ago when they were packing up. They said the rent had been raised more than they could afford, but they were looking for a new location. I hope they post where they end up. The location was ideal too for their merchandise.

I think this was listed for sale a while back, trying to sell the contents? I was sad to see them go as well, is there anywhere else in browns valley to eat besides the chevron? Raising the rent in times of distress or recession? NEVER works.

Talking to Karen from Karen's Kuts a while back, the building owner has been trying to raise rent all them time on the tenants.....what a shame.......better to have someone paying rent at the current rate than none at all.......if I recall, the building owner doesn't even live in the area, so no ties to them community.

I will also miss this store. They carried a nice selection of local wines and at a fair price. It was also a quick in and out for a bag of ice, milk, ice cream ect.

Heidi said forget paying more, landlord is crazy and ups rents yearly knowing todays economic state of affairs and doesnt seem to care when he runs business out...funny that means no money coming in to him either, sounds like a sharp business man!!!
Hopefully we can all say hello to the great folks at the Mercantile sometime in the future over at the new Sycamore campgrounds and park.Last I heard she was trying to open a store inside the park which would be awesome!!!Good luck Heidi and we all miss you gals and guy!!!!

I hear that the Mercantile is being rented out as a garden shop. Considering the size of that unit, I can only think that they will be setting it up for growing pot or supplying the means to do so. This is a spot where the school bus stops. We need to pay attention to what is going on under our noses.

If the place is going to be set up as a garden supply, why would you think it is for cannabis? Growers can find what they need at any nursey. Respectable people grow and you would be surprised by who in our area is. You know what they say about bad apples.

Well, today the owner of the buildings that were Browns Valley Mercantile, the flooring store, and Karen's Kuts, was overheard to say that the garden store is no ones business but his and that we 'Redneck Foothill' people need to stay out of his business. As far as canabis, my major concern is that the school buses stop right at that spot. He also said that he had the permits and that all the people in the foothills are uses anyhow. Oh, yeah....we are all predudice against him.
So guess I am Redneck-Joyce:-) and happy to be part of that crowd.

A garden supply is very differnt than growing at an establishment. If cannabis is going to try to be grown where a school bus stop is then that is not cool. As for me redneck too. Still if a garden supply is done right, I don't see how it effects kids. Has anyone ever gone to Two Chicks nursey in msvl. Very nice place done right.

Hell, I'd buy the building if I had the means to do so just to get rid of the current owner. Why would he own a building in a place he feels so strongly against? Makes one wonder. I haven't been in to see Karen yet. Is she sticking around or packing up too............not surprised if the landlord ups her rent to make up for losing the other 2 businesses. Oh, And I'm a proud South Carolina transplanted to Cali Redneck!!!!

Maybe the better idea is to approach the school district and pitch the "I don't want the school bus dropping off my child at or near a store that caters to pot growers" angle. Not that I think it will work. The sheriff could care less about the pot growers in the area, perhaps there is a kick-back factor that we don't know about. But if it is just a garden supply store I doubt you will get a rise out of them. Perhaps it is just time to give up the fight against the pot and let it grow. One of these days, there will be a new sheriff in town and maybe he or she will take a different view of our community and want to make it better for all us Rednecks!

Would someone please explain how a store that sells garden supplies could have any effect on kids being dropped off or picked up by a school bus? These stores do not sell pot. They are not a dispensary. They sell soil, pots, lighting and other things associated with gardening. Its a store that will be useful for everyone in the foothills looking to grow anything whether it be vegetables, flowers or yes even pot. We should support local and small business growth in OUR community not demonize it.
As for the owner of the building referring to our community as a bunch of rednecks, that isn't cool but let us keep in mind that just because someone here says that he said it doesn't mean that he said it. People love to stir the pot on this forum.
As for the "kickback" theory for the Sheriffs in the area I am perplexed by such an allegation. How or why would there be a kickback? Why would anyone give a kickback for growing their medicine. These are legal gardens. There is no need for anyone to kick anything to anybody.

Anybody with a script can find what they need to grow cannabis at any of our local nurseys or hardware stores, what you can't get there is your meds. Buy they way guess where it's easiest for kids to get drugs, their parents medicine cabinet. Pain pills can be deadly and easily addictive. Teens are popping those things like they are candy. Maybe more parents should be aware of that then judging those who choose to not take pills for their medical needs.

Wow people have no problem with kids being pick up or dropped off across the street from the bar or at the willow glen bar, but a garden supply store is off limits REALLY!!!! As for the Redneck comment. I'm proud to call myself A red blooded American Redneck!!! But if the owner wants to trash talk our community. I for one will boycott any business he opens. And it's really getting old people out there trash talking growers!!!! Educate yourselves!!! Kickbacks for what???? The Sheriff's dept seems to be doing good job at finding illegal grows. Their is nothing they can do or should do at legal grow sites. Prop 215 voted in by the people Cali gives people the right to grow their own meds. IT IS LEGAL!!!! So if your neighbor is growing and you don't like it sorry about your luck. Get over it!!!! Or not, but there is nothing you can do about it :)

Great point Alienfuel, it is one I thought of later after I had already posted. Funny there is no mention of the bar directly across the street from the old mercantile. Are we not concerned about patrons leaving the bar after drinking??? I am would be willing to bet the whole redneck fiasco is completely fabricated to help bring negative press to this new business, The whole thing sounds suspiciously cliche. "was over heard to have said" give me a break.

Dragonfly-healer: I am amazed at your post concerning the Sheriff not caring less about the pot. Either you are very uninformed or have a political point to grind, the truth of the matter is..The people of California voted for medical marijuana which now allows pot heads to get permits to use dope and grow it. It is legal if the permits are issued. The Sheriff has been doing a great job busting the illegal growers, i.e. over 1500 plants last month, several thousand this year. Why blame the Sheriff for not arresting legal pot growers? Again, your post is very interesting.

The Sheriff said at a meeting recently that they have pulled over 400 plants from "legal" gardens. I think all California legal grows should have to be registered with the county Sheriffs Dept.

Well, no one knows what is really going on until someone starts to move in. Nobody ever makes a living there, so whatever moves in will probably go broke anyway!!! It's a mystery to me, for sure. I've seen a lot of businesses there over the past 30 years, for sure. The hair salon is a winner, but nothing else seems to stay.

True. Although if I'm going clear to Hallwood it's because I have to go to town. THen I'll just go to Osh, Ace, etc. Wonder what other types of business could make it in that little store. Anybody got any good ideas? The carpet store didn't make it...What would work?

I like the idea of a eatery of some sort.......little family place would be nice, but I'm not sure that spot would be large enough unless it was combined with the floor space of the old carpet/floor store.

October 23, 2011 2:15:42 PM PDT
I think if someone were to combine the spaces like Roger suggests, and then open a sporting goods/bait & tackle/hunting shop that caters to the hunting/fishing/recreation on local major lakes (Collins, Bullards, Little Grass Valley, Englebright), the Yuba River and hunting areas, they could make a killing.

October 23, 2011 2:38:33 PM PDT
That would be a great success as well Jenn. Something sorta like the Ace Hardware in Marysville (the old part). They have most everythign you can think of for hunting/fishing and of course the hardware side of things. Although, I suppose the hardware side could be left out as I really like the Foothills ACE across from Willow Glen.....so a good fishing/hunting/outdoor store would be awesome for this area........heck, maybe if that were to happen, the Tuff Stuff Jerky could get in there as well and make it a team effort business.

There are plenty of other counties, or states for that matter, to choose from. Good luck if you think other places don't have their fair share of problems. If I was worried about what other people were doing on their own land and on their own time I would find me a nice little homeowners association that tells everyone how to paint their house and when to mow their lawns. Doesn't that sound like the good life? Everyone doing what they're told and living by other people's rules.
Back on topic, you know what would do great there, a Walmart!! Then we wouldn't need any of these pesky locally owned businesses. And because they are such a large corporation they could find tax loopholes and never give anything back to our community. Sure they will hire some locals but they won't pay them enough or provide healthcare. In fact they encourage their employees to get state benefits so that they can pass that expense to the middle class because their CEO's only make millions of dollars in profits and can't afford it themselves.
All in favor of a Walmrt say "Aye"!!!

wow Hate WalMart day. Actually I have three relatives who work at WalMart and ALL have health insurance and other benefits. Their wages are not bad at all and none are on, or have been asked to be on, to go on state benefits. WalMart also gives back to the community in donations to different organizations. If someone doesn't like WalMart then don't shop there.

I have seen most of the stuff listed in Backlash's post at the Collins Lake store. It doesn't cost you to drive in there and shop. Garbarino's has a deli also one at the Chevron. Auto parts maybe or a Small engine repair/ parts shop. How bout a solar store like solar city, Solar appliances great for camping or remote living, Green energy store

Anyone willing to do little bit of research can find out for themselves what Walmarts business practices are. The truth is they have gotten a lot better. I still haven't shopped there in five years but who knows, tomorrow is a new day.
"personfacelady" you didn't start this thread so I don't think you have any authority on what can and can't be discussed here. Sure, let us keep discussing what the old Mercantile store can be and just disregard the fact that someone has already taken some actual initiative and is in the process of opening a new fresh business that could actually be useful to the entire community. Of course I realize that there is still an open store front but that is not the old Mercantile so should we start a new thread for that. I say no, its an open forum and we are FREE to talk about what we want here. I didn't attack anyone with my Walmart comment so why all the fuss? Can I not express a thought or opinion like everyone else? That is rhetorical of course, no need to reply. Anyways, I have a feeling that garden store is going to be a success and I wish the owner the best of luck. How about we support the business that is there now and stop planning for the day it fails? Just a thought...

Geez folks, can't we stay on topic here........and CeliCel83, I did start this thread. Please start another thread to bash/talk about Wal-Mart.........please.
As for me not wanting to stay here when I retire. I am from the east coast originally and know how different it can be, so I can speak from experience comparing states. This state is wacko.....I can't say it's only Yuba County as I've not lived anywhere else in California except for a short time in Lake Wildwood HOA - Nevada Cty (that didn't last long for sure). I love thr foothills area, don't get me wrong, but the state fee's/rules for all things outdoors are redonkulous compared to where I came from......just not used to being fee'd to death for everything outdoors. Enough said on that though.....stay focused folks......Mercatile/floor building ideas?
