Whether or not you believe GMO foods are bad for you, the Label GMO Foods Initiative merely gives us the same choice that consumers in 50 other countries already have. On this issue as with many others, the best tool the public has when up against global corporations, who can buy and sell regulatory agencies, politicians, laws, and entire countries at will, is to hit them where it makes a difference, in their pocketbooks. Their greatest fear, as it has been for all vested interests down the centuries, is vox populi – the voice of the people.
The last thing the “great and powerful Oz” wants us to see is the “man behind the curtain”. In this case, the list of ingredients on the box or the tags on the fruits and vegetables we buy.
Food labels already list: Calories, Total Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Potassium, Total Carbohydrates, Protein, Vitamins, and all ingredients in descending order by total percentage of the entire product. Not such a great leap to label which of these ingredients are GMO or not.
Whether it’s high fructose corn syrup, MSG, artificial sweeteners, aluminum compounds in deodorants or lead products in hair dyes, I want to know what’s in there so I can make an informed choice.
