    High School in the Foothills

    Yuba Environmental Science Charter Academy

    (YES Charter Academy)

free - state funded public education with bus service

Oregon House/Dobbins - off Marysville Rd. on Texas Hill

    If interested call 692-2210

Attention: Parents of High School students & those approaching High School.

Families in the foothills would like to see a High School in our community.  There is no reason why we can't have this. YES Charter Academy (K-8) and board are considering expanding to High School.  On 2/1/12 "High School in the Foothills Committee" was established under their board. We are in the early stages, have a strong team and have tremendous support for a high school in this area. So far we have already collected more than two dozen families interested in their student(s) attending YES Charter Academy High School. Clearly parents want this and YES Charter Academy is here to help.

If you would like to add your student on the "Interested List" call the school at

692-2210.  Also, K-8 is excepting new enrollment.

    Thank you,

I think it would be fantastic if they opened a high school in the foothills!!! My daughter will be going into kindergarten next year so she is pretty far from high school, but I have already dreaded the fact that she would have to go to Marysville High school. I would still love to sign even though I dont have a child ready for high school!!! Wonderful Idea and greatly needed!!!

It would be great to have a HS in the foothills. We all read that MJUSD is looking to cut $3 million in the near future. Sports and other programs always get chopped too. A small school in the hills wouldn't have much of a sports presence due to enrollment anyway so it maybe it is time for MJUSD to partner with YES Academy. No sports and related costs. There could be a transportation issue but I'm sure parents will find a way - the private schools do! It seems everyone agrees our kids will benefit so I hope the community can make it happen.

My kids are through high school so I wasn't going to comment. But 2Grands, while it is true that everyone on this post agrees, not EVERYONE agrees. It is not just sports that gets chopped. As a matter of fact, some sports will stay. It is usually, music arts and academics that go. Some academics are required so they stay. But things like foreign language, band, orchestra: they go. College prep courses go. Academic Decathlon will likely go. That is the one team from Marysville that has gone to state 7 of the last 8 years, I believe. The more you split the funding for MJUSD, the more your schools will be able to provide just the basics. Many people have an idea of what they think happens at MJUSD, but don't have kids there. My youngest graduated in 2010. I had at least one child there from 2000 to 2010. While I do think that having a high school here in the foothills will make it easier as far as transportation, I'm not sure it will give our foothill kids a better high school education.

YES has transportation covered. They bought a new school bus from YCUSD and run routes with stops in Yuba City, Marysville, Loma Rica, Browns Valley, Brownsville, and Dobbins. They offer bus service for free to all students enrolled.

I'm all for a high school in this area. My last two at home and my grandchild could benefit from this! We are on the list and appreciate all the help parents are doing and for YES taking this on! I did checked with them - the HS will be fully accredited and it sounds like there could be sports. I look forward to the day of having a High School close by - keeping our kids in the community, making it easier for parents to participate and to establishing clubs/social events/sports for our kids to do after school or on the weekends. What a concept!

The community has shown enough student interested support for the YES Board to take the next steps. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible. We will continue to take interested students as we move forward. The YES Board would like to implement this by 2012 but because of property and County Building Code restraints it would likely be 2013. As cost saving measures we would like to set up fun events for fundraising. Any and all volunteer help with these endeavors would be greatly appreciated, especially with regards to septic and site planning details in the construction industry who might be willing to donate their time. YES Charter Academy High School will be a science based high school and will be fully accredited. They are looking into setting up various clubs/sports such as Future Farmers of America, baseball/softball, track and field and wrestling. We appreciate everyone's efforts in this project and will continue to give you updates on progress and the timeline as they develop. Thank you, Margie

KSmith, when the high school gets established would YESCA be under MJUSD of County Education? I think a high school poprtion for YESCA would be an awesome addition. :)

The high school would still be chartered through MJUSD, but as an independent charter it operates as a mini-district under the same board as the current YES Charter Academy.

YES will be at the event in Brownsville tomorrow so if you are interested in putting your student on the list, have questions, or could volunteer, come by - we will be located in the bookstore parking lot 9-4. If interested in K-8 we will have fliers, enrollment forms, bus schedules, coloring packets and more! Our staff, parents, and board look forward to meeting you.

Anyone remember the 32 million dollar bond we voted for a few years back that was suppossed to include a high school in the foothills? Look at your property tax statements and see the 400 bucks you pay each month then notice the pretty white signs in from of many of the MJUSD schools thanking your for your bond funds, then ask yourself, "What happened?" If you find out, I'd like to know too.

You are speaking of Measure H voted and passed on June 6, 2006 for 37million on upgrades and repairs to 20 schools under MJUSD. As a parent I have asked this question and received this information so far: According to MJUSD, Williams + Paddon Architects and the Building Department this project is on hold due to an environmental impact report from the first location. From what I have been told they have the money and are looking at a second location. They are also up against a septic issue - the county wants them to have a sewage treatment plan on site. They assured me that it will happen but they don't know when. As many of us appreciate their efforts we are tired of waiting for what is best for our students. This is why parents have started a movement to get a high school in the foothills. And we are thrilled that YES has considered making this possible.

When we moved up here in 2005, they kept saying the high school was "due" to open within a year or two. Well THAT never happened. My older daughter has been attendint Forest Charter, in Nevada City, since we moved. She is now a senior in their Global Studies Program. It is a GREAT program. College prep, she only goes two days a week and all assignments are done at home. They have other options for highschool as well. My younger one is a junior at Forest, but is totally independent study. That works for her. I would love to see a high school at YESCA. My youngest did 8th grade the year they opened. I also can't say enough about YESCA. I had held her back to 7th grade because of Foothills Intermediate. The teachers at YESCA took her under their wing ang got her through the 7th grade bench marks by Thanksgiving and she ended up graduating 8th grade on time. GREAT program there as well. So there are options other than Marysville HIgh School.

We are still having trouble finding a site for the school that can accommodate enough people with the septic and water systems, but are looking int o options. Would an independent study school or partial independent study be a good option or is a full time school preferable?

Is there a restriction for the site (that is which part of the Foothills can it be)? How big must the site be?

Our kitchen is in Oregon House, so a reasonable distance from there is preferable so that lunches will be fresh. The site must be big enough to accommodate 150 people. The biggest limit is from Yuba County building codes, which are very strict on leach fields and septic/sewage.
